Panta Rhei sessions at EGU - 27 April/May 2nd, 2014

The next General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union, to be held in Vienna during April 27 - May 2nd, 2014, will host sessions that are organised by the Panta Rhei community and will focus on hydrology and change.

Panta Rhei: a vision and an agenda for the next 10 years of hydrological research in support of society

It is a visionary session that will explicitly focus on Panta Rhei. It is a session for invited speakers only, namely: Hubert Savenjie, Demetris Koutsoyiannis, Upmanu Lall. Berit Arheimer, Efi Foufoula-Georgiou, Stefania Tamea.

First call for Research Themes and Working Groups: 25 proposals received !

On January 31st, 2014, the deadline for the first call for Research Themes (RT) and Working Groups (WG) of Panta Rhei expired. The first call was a success! Eighteen proposals have been received for Working Groups and seven proposals for Research Themes. The proposed Working Groups include 205 researchers! The large attention that the community dedicated to the first call is a clear demonstration of the popularity of Panta Rhei.

Proposals wil be now reviewed by the Target Leaders and the Chair of Panta Rhei, in agreement with the IAHS governance. The list of the approved themes and groups will be published in the near future. Research Themes may be added by Target Leaders at this stage. Later on, a second open call for Working Groups and Research Themes will be issued.

The Panta Rhei session at AGU: a success

The Panta Rhei session at the AGU Fall meeting was a success in terms of attendance and scientific content. More than 50 presentations were given as oral talks and posters. Finally, the session was closed by a memorable dinner that was an unusual and exciting opportunities to share ideas. The dinner took place at the Panta Rei (yes, a "h" is missing in the spelling of "Rhei", but the quality of the dinner did not suffer) restaurant in Columbus Aveneu and was attended by some 30 presenters and conveners.
We are pleased to make available for download the presentations that were used to deliver the oral invited talks in the three themes that were treated during the sessions. We would like to thank very much the speakers for making the documents available.

For the theme "Reservoir operation and control", Nick van de Giesen delivered the talk Small reservoirs in the West African savanna: Usage, monitoring and impact. The same topic was discussed by Trent Biggs who delivered the talk Are small reservoirs important? The regional sociohydrology and climatic sensitivity of irrigation systems in southern India. Moreover, Christopher T. Robinson delivered the talk Adaptive Flow Management of Regulated Rivers: Successes and Challenges. Finally, Christopher P. Konrad delivered the talk Are large-scale manipulations of streamflow for ecological outcomes effective either as experiments or management actions?.
For the theme "Peatland and Wetlands", Irina Creed delivered the talk Diversification of farmers markets to include carbon markets: Slowing the rate of loss of mineral wetlands on human dominated landscapes. Moreover, Charles Lane delivered the talk Ecological Processes of Isolated Wetlands: Ecosystem Services and the Significant Nexus.
For the theme "Sociohydrology and change", Alberto Viglione delivered the talk Socio-hydrology modelling and flood risk: roles of collective memory, risk-taking attitude and trust. Furthermore, Upmanu Lall delivered the talk From hydroclimatic prediction to negotiated and risk managed water allocation and reservoir operation.
The talks by Viglione and Lall directly addressed the integrated interpretation and modelling of water and societal systems. It is particularly interesting to summarise the conclusions by Lall: (1) The challenge is to understand, (predict) and manage processes that define the redistribution of the resource. (2) Climate change is just one element of significant structural changes in the offing. (3) Gaining experience with new instruments is essential to provide social balance and resource investment incentives. (4) Emergence of new needs for hydrologic information. (5) We need soft and hard technologies, but most of all understanding of the changing context in which we operate.

Panta Rhei at AGU and the Panta Rhei Poster

The Panta Rhei session at the AGU Fall meeting is going to be held on Tuesday, December 10 and Wednesday, December 11. We will publish a report on the session that counts more than 50 contributions! A Poster on Panta Rhei will be presented in the session to introduce Panta Rhei to the international scientific community. The poster is available for download here!. I am looking forward to see in person all of you that are attending AGU!

A great success is foreseen for the Panta Rhei session at the AGU Fall Meeting!

The next AGU Fall Meeting, to be held in San Francisco (USA) during December 9-13, 2013, will host a session framed within the context of Panta Rhei. The session, titled "H21N. Hydrological Change and Water Systems: Feedbacks, Prediction, and Experimental Management", is convened by Nandita Basu (University of Waterloo), Alberto Montanari (University of Bologna), Maria Cristina Bruno and Theodore Melis (USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center). The oral presentations will take place on Tuesday, December 10, during the all day in room 3002 (Moscone West). Posters will be presented in the morning of Wednesday, December 11, Hall A-C (Moscone South).

The session has gained an exciting interest. 54 contributions were submitted that are focusing on the Panta Rhei themes. The symposium will be an exciting opportunity to get started with the activities of Panta Rhei and to bridge with existing initiatives and researches.

A visionary session on Panta Rhei will also be organised during the EGU meeting to be held in Vienna in April 2014. More details will be posted later.

The Panta Rhei Target Leaders

Panta Rhei includes three targets, namely, (1) Understanding, (2) Estimation and prediction and (3) Science in practice. Each target is led by a Target Leader and a Target Co-Leader. Target Leaders are nominated for a biennium and their role is to assist the Panta Rhei Chair in overseeing the scientific activity that is carried out within Panta Rhei and to keep the links with the community. The tasks of the Target Leaders include the identification and preliminary approval of Research Themes and Working Groups (the final approval is formalised by the IAHS Bureau), the organisation of Panta Rhei initiatives (scientific session at conferences, educational initiatives, summer schools etc.) and the synthesis of the activity that is carried out under each target.

The Target Leaders for the Biennium 2013-2015 are:

Target 1 - Understading: Hilary McMillan (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand - Leader), Magdalena Rogger (Vienna University of Technology, Austria - Co-Leader)
Target 2 - Estimation and prediction: Hafzullah Aksoy (Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Turkey - Leader), Dominc Mazvimavi (University of the Western Cape, South Africa - Co-Leader)
Target 3 - Science in Practice: Giuliano Di Baldassare (Unesco-IHE, The Netherlands - Leader), Yan Huang (Changjiang Water Resources Commission, China - Co-Leader)

Panta Rhei launched!

Panta Rhei has been launched during the IAHS General Assembly held in Gotheborg during July 22-26, 2013. Panta Rhei officially took off on Wednesday, July 24th, when I gave the start-up talk.

Next steps
Target Leaders for Panta Rhei will be identified soon, on invitation by the IAHS bureau.
A call for research themes (RT) and working groups (WG) has been launched to the IAHS Commissions, and proposals are being received. A public call for RT and WG will also be issued soon on the web site. Please stay tuned and visit us! All the proposals that will be received for RT and WG will be reviewed by the Panta Rhei Chair and Target Leaders in order to ensure coherence and cooperation, and will be finally approved by the IAHS bureau.
Please note that Target Leaders are committed to produce one community paper for each target at the end of each biennium of Panta Rhei. Authors will be selected basing in their contribution to the research activity. Please contact Target Leaders (they will be announce later) to get more information.
Finally, please note that Panta Rhei events are already announed! A session on Panta Rhei is being organised at the next AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Deadline for abstract submission is Aug 6! Please consider to contribute!
