Field Course in Hydrology & Geology at Reykjavik University

We are excited to inform Panta Rhei fellows that we will be offering a 7 day Field Course in Hydrology & Geology in Iceland, focusing on “The Principals of Resilience Based Management of Natural Resources”, from 17th -22nd August, 2015. The course will include daily field trips, field measurement, modeling aspects and management strategies. It would be our pleasure to welcome Panta-Rhei-members here in Iceland.

This is the first time we will be offering this programme, which is a joint collaboration with the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland. A Spring School on Global Climate Change Impacts Assessment and Water Resources during May 15-22 in Beijing

A Spring School on Global Climate Change Impacts Assessment and Water Resources will be organized during May 15-22 in Beijing. It is funded by my university (Beijing Forestry University) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as one key events of the Panta Rhei working group "Water Scarcity Assessment". The School is organized by prof. Junguo Liu, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, China and Director-general of the Society for Ecological Restoration in Beijing, China. The reports of the activity carried out by the Panta Rhei Working Groups in 2014 is available for download here below. The WGs have carried out an amazing activity last year, therefore proving the enthusiasm of the Panta Rhei researchers and the popularity and significance of the Panta Rhei themes.
I would like to thank very much the WG Leaders and all the researchers that are working in Panta Rhei. We are more than 400 people, and therefore the Panta Rhei community is numerous and solid.
A summary of the Panta Rhei activity will be presented at the IAHS General Assembly that will take place in June in Prague. I hope to see many of you there.

Session "Extreme hydrological events: deciphering changes in hazard and risk at different time-scales" at the Science Conference "Our Common Future Under Climate Change" in Paris 7-10 JULY 2015
The session is jointly organised by the Panta Rhei Working group “Changes in flood risk” and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), Lima, Perú and will be chaired by Heidi Kreibich, Gil Mahe, Jean Michel Martinez, Jean-Emmanuel Paturel, Bruno Turcq.
Abstracts can be submitted by following the appropriate link at the conference website and selecting session "Extreme Hydrological Events" at Day 1: State of Knowledge on Climate Change. The deadline for abstract submission is 10th of March, 2015.

A Panta Rhei Session at the European Climate Change Adaptation conference

Session "4.II - Adaptation to changing flood risk" at the European Climate Change Adaptation conference, 12th to 14th of May, 2015, in Copenhagen
The session is organised by the Panta Rhei Working group “Changes in flood risk” chaired by Heidi Kreibich and Sergiy Vorogushyn.
Abstracts can be submitted by following the appropriate link at the conference website. The deadline for abstract submission is 1st of February, 2015.
Flood damage has been increasing globally and in Europe during recent decades, which is assumed to be mainly related to socio-economic factors, such as accumulation of assets and increasing susceptibility in flood-prone areas. However, other factors play a role as well, such as climate change and human interventions in river systems and catchments.
Due to expected further increases of flood damage, European countries reconsider their policies for flood risk management and develop climate adaptation strategies. This requires analyses of changing flood risk, projections of future flood losses and the assessment of which strategic adaptation alternatives are to be preferred. To support such an assessment, the IAHS Panta Rhei working group “Changes in flood risk” aims at understanding, quantifying and modelling the linkages between physical or socio-economic drivers and changes in flood risk as well as exploring adaptation pathways. Risks included here result from pluvial, river and coastal flooding.
The main aim of this session is to present and discuss results from various countries and disciplines on changing flood risk, risk management and adaptation. Explicit links will be sought to practical problems and solutions, and abstracts are invited for talks that cover research as well as practical implementation of risk assessment and adaptation plans.

A report from the AGU Fall Meeting

The Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union ( http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2014/) proposed several events that are relevant to Panta Rhei.
First of all, session H34E was explicitly dedicated to Panta Rhei, which was titled "Sociohydrology: Modeling Feedbacks in Complex Coupled Natural Human Water Systems (Panta Rhei - Everything Flows)". Oral talks were delivered by Alberto Montanari (Chair of Panta Rhei), Richard Vogel, Charles J Vorosmarty, Christopher A Scott, Veena Srinivasan, Juan Carlos Castilla Rho, and Rachata Muneepeerakul. Furthermore, Hubert Savenije, President of IAHS, delivered an oral talk in session H41L, titled "Water Footprint Assessment and the Panta Rhei research initiative of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS)".
Furthermore, it is my pleasure to report that Hubert Savenije was also awarded withe the Fellowship of the American Geophysical Union and Demetris Koutosyiannis, Editor of the Hydrological Sciences Journal, was awarded with the Lorenz Lecture. Overall, is has been a very stimulating meeting that brought a lot of visibility to Panta Rhei.

Flood risk analysis, which is used to make important and often expensive decisions, is complex and subject to significant uncertainty. The fact that this information is important but also uncertain has led to an increasing requirement to verify and validate flood risk analyses.
In this workshop we aim to gain an overview of validation and verification methods for models used in flood risk analysis \u2013 specifically for models of processes for which only limited observations are available (e.g., levee
failure, inundation, and flood impacts). In these cases, traditional validation techniques that require a lot of data are not applicable.
This workshop will bring together international experts on flood hazard estimation and risk assessment, working on fluvial, pluvial, coastal, and flash floods. The goal is to critically discuss to what extent current approaches and models are able to accurately estimate hazard, failure, exposure, and vulnerability \u2013 in sum: flood risk. The workshop will provide a platform to share best practices to validate and evaluate flood risk models.
We will work together to compose a definitive summary of the state-of-the art in flood risk validation \u2013 highlighting gaps and research needs \u2013 with the aim of getting flood risk validation a higher priority on the research agenda.
